take the mental out of mental health

19 Oct

fancy a chat?

need a hug?

want me to come over for a cup of tea?

how about we spend the day doing something fun?

how about we deal with mental health more positively and proactively like we do our physical health?

how about we promote meditation, relaxation and positive thinking as part of our curriculum in school, before we even begin to look at spreadsheets and pie charts?

the stats are a little scary.

s is for strategy

26 Jun

strategy (Greek “στρατηγία”—stratēgia, “art of troop leader; office of general, command, generalship”[1]) is a high level plan to achieve one or more goals under conditions of uncertainty.

strategy is important because the resources available to achieve these goals are usually limited.

strategy is also about attaining and maintaining a position of advantage over adversaries through the successive exploitation of known or emergent possibilities rather than committing to any specific fixed plan designed at the outset.

mike tyson

i was researching the meaning of the word strategy for my assignment about a new little venture called gym bunny and this caught my eye:

strategy helps you decide what matters most- and where to focus your scarce resources for maximum impact

tattoo or not tattoo- part deux

29 Apr

So as a follow up to my previous post- A few people have been asking if I went through with the tattoo or not..and I DID!!

Ended up getting two in the end..

I warn you all— anyone thinking of getting one done..getting your ink ON is seriously addictive stuff.. Even when i was half way through ink #1 I was already thinking ooohhh.. maybe I should get this or that next time…

So I went in and spoke to the artist, told him what it was that I wanted and he made a stencil to make sure it was in the right position, the right size and to see if it was what I REALLY wanted.

wuhuuuu!! I love them 🙂 I’ll post soon to  tell a little more about what made me go in that direction….and a few more ideas about what’s to come eeeeeeeeeep!

Sightseeing in Barcelona

So you have the guidebook, so you know what you need to see…Well here’s my best of  if you are stuck for time in Barcelona, in no particular order….

Parc del Laberint d’Horta
This is as the name suggests, a giant labyrinth. Made me feel like I was in a lovely film, running around trying not to get lost. Beautiful gardens, crumbling Arabic mansion, and no city sounds…wonderful. p.s. I’ve lived in Barcelona for 4 years and I just discovered this beauty last weekend. It’s a weirdly not-rounded-up €2.17.

The Magic Fountain
This is a must see, but make sure to check the website before you make the journey. It’s roaring classical music meets lights, lasers and romance. Oh and it doesn’t cost a thing.

Mar Bella Beach
Forget the dirty touristic beach that sits on the end of the promenade. Go a little further, and meet the real 20 somethings of Barcelona. Great music, cleaner water and lots of bronzed bodies.

Walks

Gaudi
Parc Guell, Sagrada Familia, Fountains in Parc De la Cuitadella, Casa Mila and Casa Batllo…they are all in the guidebook for for good reasons.

El Gothic
Windy streets, lots of tourists, roman ruins, big squares, lots of cafes and bars, souvenir shops, shady characters, cheap raybans, hippy clothes will all leave you with the distinct feeling you’ve just been on holiday…Check out Plaza Trippy for some cosy but crazy nightlife.

La Rambla
It even has it’s own wiki page.

El Raval
Twisty, dirty streets, full of chaos, loud noises, large families, great museums, pickpocketers, lots of great bars, a huge mix of expats from all over the world..oh and lots of men offering cerveza beer and a whole concoction of other things. weird, a little smelly in places. But very Barcelona.

Gracia
This is real Barcelona, full of 20 somethings, always up for a good time, with fresh food markets, little quirky vintage boutiques and cosy little bars with great prices.

Camp Nou

One of the most famous reasons to visit Barcelona. This stadium is HUGE, and to be honest any ticket you get guarantees a good view of the guys in action.
Get your tickets here: Football Tickets Barcelona
These guys speak English, French, Spanish and German and have been doing this for years.

Bars

Timeline
Owned by the lovely Carla and Nina-both bilingual- this bar is sure to please. Decorated cleverly in, well, a timeline of clocks, vintage furniture, old school books as menus, delicious cocktails served in generous jam jars, oh and the most yummy patatas bravas you will find in Gracia..this is a great location to meet new friends, kick back, relax and watch the time go by..

Heliogabal
This is a gem if you are a big fan of little intimate bars with good music and cheap beer and vino. The crowd is a good mix of locals, and expats, usually only too happy to strike up conversation.

El Chatelet
This is one of my favs, they do great cocktails, there is always a good crowd and the atmosphere is second to none. The crowd is kind of trendy, but relaxed and chatty. Mostly locals.

Tapas

I think I should be on commission for Bitacora. Every time we have guests over, this is the one place that we always want to show off in. Fabulous tapas, served in a grungy FC Barcelona supporters bar. Rude writing on the bathroom walls, dirty napkin filled floors, but some of the most delicious food I have EVER tasted. eh..did I mention I think this place is pretty awesome??

Museums
Quirky, in the heart of Raval, surrounded by skaterboys and girls, is Macba, tattoos, kitch bars, and stark white surroundings, this is the heartbeat of the art scene in Barcelona. Keep an eye out for some great photography exhibits in the gallery there.

to tat or not tattoo

11 Jul
INFINITY (or eternity): in ancient india and tibet, the symbol of infinity represented perfection, dualism, and the unity between male and female. more interesting though, is that in the occult, tarot is linked to magic and represents equilibrium, infinity and the balance of various forces. the uroborus (a circular serpent biting its tail) has also been found in this shape, but that’s not really important to me to be totally honest. more recently we know it as a mathematical symbol for infinity in numbers, time or space.
so now comes the tricky part. to tat or not tattoo..on my wrist or maybe the back of my neck? a bit higher than in this photo?  light brown or black? 6 months or permenant? i’m still deciding…and because i’m still deciding it’s probably not time is it? or is it?? aghhhhhh!! i’ve been thinking about this since 2006 when i went travelling with my mate chris and, since then, i’ve been so close but yet so far. and scared of the fact it’s such a COMMITMENT.  like getting married to someone that you’re not entirely sure of…but are kind of stuck with indefinetly (or until you sign the ‘divorce’ papers and get him/her/it removed).then if i start seeing loads of people with the same tattoo it becomes a kind of tramp stamp rather than something personal and meaningful. or is it still personal and meaningful to me agh??!!
i mean i DO love the meaning of this symbol AND what it has represented in the past for thousands of years and that is also stands for something hopeful for the future: “a double endlessness, eternity, recreation, a symbol of hope, forgiveness,” “the heart of the buddha shakyamuni, resignation of spirit, all happiness that humanity desires, mind, infinity, all and many.” in buddhist culture the endless knot (chang or p’an-chang) receives and forwards abundance, and is a symbol of longevity, infinity and eternity.
but with all this in mind-can i just add here, that i am NOT religious, nor am i overly spiritual-like a million or so other irish people i’m sure, i have ‘toyed’ with the idea of getting a tattoo for years (even when chinese symbols were all the rage-shudder…)…never quite sure and never quite ‘doing’….as i am hugely and giantly indecisive…
but saying all of that,  for the past while, due to a family illness, the idea of actually committing to something so permanent-that represents and depicts or ‘presents’ to everyone a ‘me’ that is balanced, serene, forgiving, hopeful, looking into a future and so on..even if this does sound a little ‘cliche’, whatever…the thought fills me with a little hope and happiness…and gives an otherwise unsure future a little stamp of my own control over my future in some way and a little stamp of an inbetween me moving forward.
mum was diagnosed with stage four terminal lung cancer in october of last year. with a prognosis or 3-6 months. she’s still alive and kicking and has somehow found her ‘balance’, not through religion, nor a tattoo (i’m not deluded!) nor anything of the sort…she has always been strong, but this is something that will knock her. although she has done really well so far, and is only quite coming to terms with the ‘terminal’ aspect of things, as we all are, i know that this will beat her…but i do feel that, at the same time, as stupid and as juvenile as this sounds..a part of her will always be here with us…
religion aside..i do believe that people don’t just disappear..they leave a mark…whatever that is, i don’t know….and part of me doesn’t want to know or think about that yet, to be honest…but the idea of longevity, infinity, recreation, hope, a view to the future…i think it’s this kind of positivity that keeps us all going at a time like this..when we really have to take each day as it comes and look to the future only in a positive way, within reason, and not just to plan and escape what’s going on at present…and i suppose for me, in my own silly little way..getting a symbol like this, on my skin, kind of freeze frames a part of that longevity and hope…
INFINITY
“this has become symbolic of the future and futurist thought, depicting eternal life, harmonious interaction between conscious and subconscious, serenity, harmony and dominion over the physical plane.
